After noticing his staff member’s improvement after a few performance sessions, David’s Manager, Andrew, contacted us stating:

“On the back of David’s recent positive experience I am actually interested in discussing further coaching for myself to aid personal and career development”.

We met for an initial no obligation discussion and agreed a further three hour and two hour session. We also decided to carry out a Discus Analysis prior to the first meeting.

The first three hour session comprised feedback on the Discus Analysis. Andrew was a “Communicating Planner”, who was amiable and well-liked within the organisation. However, he had been informed that his perceived style of leadership was too casual and he had a fairly passive approach to management, often compromising or avoiding confrontations. He also needed to increase his influencing skills with individuals and teams. He wanted to work more on being objective and yet still supportive of his staff. He was also feeling rather de-motivated and lacking in time management skills.

  • We established where Andrew was now in terms of personal development and gained an insight into his current situation at work and at home.
  • We discussed his development plan and future objectives.
  • We identified the sources of his frustration and lack of motivation and worked on how we could change his situation so that he received the recognition and measurement of his performance he wanted.

Andrew quickly realised that he needed to change some of his behaviour and communicate more effectively with his network.   We created a list of long and short-term goals.

In fact, Andrew was very quick to implement his new strategy and only needed one more two-hour session.

He started to work harder and became more productive. His presentation and communication skills greatly improved and he received positive feedback from his staff and work colleagues. He built a positive good working relationship with his new line manager.   He started “self-promoting” himself – giving regular updates and summaries relating to policies - and felt more confident in his abilities.

He states:

"My experience with WorkScales has been very positive.  The coaching gave me the tools and opportunity to reflect on my personal behaviours, values and motivation and then to develop an action plan to make the necessary changes to get my career back on track and moving forward again.

I work for a great employer that proactively supports and encourages personal development.  In my case, my management and I jointly acknowledged that some bespoke training, rather the conventional ‘off the shelf’ resources often used by larger companies, might provide a solution.   Having witnessed the changes David made, and after an initial consultation, I was reassured that Workscales could provide the personal coaching and mentoring, tailored to my particular situation.

The Discus analysis was a particularly useful and insightful system that provided a baseline to work from.   From here, we mapped a Development Plan and shared ideas and tools to help me improve my style of leadership, and to be more focused and effective in my current role.     Importantly for me, I have been able to affect subtle but impactful changes without significantly compromising my personal values and beliefs.   Now, reflecting on the recent past, my motivation has increased and I am once again enjoying my role.    Recent feedback from colleagues and business partners has been very positive and endorses the value and effectiveness of the help and expertise received from Madeleine."
