David, who worked for a global pharmaceutical company, contacted us after receiving some negative feedback after being promoted to a supervisory position. After a preliminary discussion with his coach, a coaching programme was established and the first session comprised the following:
- We established where David was now in terms of personal development and gained an insight into his current situation at work and at home.
- We discussed his development plan and future objectives.
- We assessed his current performance and areas for improvement, i.e. improving interpersonal skills, prioritisation of work, planning and organisation, setting personal deadlines and delegation.
- We established that although David was keen to improve in these areas, his motivation was not particularly high.
We then underwent an exercise to ascertain what was holding him back and how his faulty beliefs were interfering with his motivation to change. The exercise greatly increased his motivation and allowed him to see how changing his behaviour could be of considerable benefit both to his company and himself.
The following coaching sessions also tackled hindrances to performance:
He was taking too long to complete tasks, because he was taking too much on and therefore the quality was suffering. He learned assertiveness skills and recognised what tasks he should and shouldn't be tackling. He learned that working hard is not necessarily working effectively (he was very tired) and learned what to delegate and how to do it.
He worked out how to organise his time better and developed a structure so that he was fully in control of all his projects and kept his "eye on the ball". He also scheduled in some time for relaxation and personal development, which was not being addressed at all when he first came to see us.
Some of the feedback we received from David during the coaching sessions was:
“I think some of the techniques we've learnt are definitely helping, in coping with difficult situations and I feel a lot more confident in meetings, both one to ones and larger discussion groups.”
“Thank you for yesterday, it was nice to see you again and the session was really helpful. I've got some really good ideas with regards to structuring my time, which hopefully we can discuss next time.”
After just a few coaching sessions, David’s performance had improved so much that he didn’t need to see us and his line manager, John, contacted us stating:
“On the back of David’s recent positive experience I am actually interested in discussing further coaching for myself to aid personal and career development”. (see Management Coaching).
